I tell you what I’m sick of finding on my Red Dwarf Google Alerts. I’m pig sick of hearing about the Red dwarf star Gliese 581 and it’s Earth like planet!!
I’ve just seen this post. The google alert claims that this person “hates Red Dwarf because it is no longer on the box….”. However, this doesn’t appear to be in the article now. Doesn’t look as if they know about the Easter specials from last year either!!

I tell you what I’m sick of finding on my Red Dwarf Google Alerts. I’m pig sick of hearing about the Red dwarf star Gliese 581 and it’s Earth like planet!!
Lol, yeah! It has given me an excellent scanning ability though.
I just remembered I used to get weekly updates about the Red Dwarf Posse who played 5-a-side (or maybe 6) but haven’t heard anything about them lately. I’ve checked the Futebol Conwy website and can’t find them in the league… aw :o(
The google alert claims that this person “hates Red Dwarf because it is no longer on the box….”.
Haha, yeah I saw that one too :oP
Also, this thread came up in my Google Alert today… :oS It’s like some kind of paradox. DON’T CROSS YOUR OWN TIMELINE!
This one has come through….Jane Killick (writer and broadcaster) has released a book called Stasis Leaked- An Unofficial Behind The scenes Guide To The First Series Of Red Dwarf
“Jane Killick was one of the major writers (if not the major writer) to cover the fantastic television comedy, Red Dwarf during its heyday. She’s gone back to some of her magazine articles, revised them and written an introduction for a new volume looking behind the scenes of the first series.”
I found the same thing through Twitter, she posted a link to Audio Boo of her talking about RD on the radio: http://audioboo.fm/boos/216492-jane-killick-interviewed-about-red-dwarf

Open Question:
What is the accent of the guy in Red Dwarf?
The one who says smeg.
(haha! Smeg!)
Answers:
Sienna
The darker guy? I think it’s Welsh.

It’s just a video of some guy filming his laptop from various angles as far as I can tell but it just amused me that he’s watching ‘Out of Time’ in the background :oP
http://totalscifionline.com/features/5769-the-100-greatest-sci-fi-fantas...
Red Dwarf came in at 29 and Ghostwatch at 76 in this 100 greatest sci-fi/fantasy TV shows list.
Go on, have a look , you know you want to disagree with it… Babylon 5 came in at number 10 *ducks for cover*
> Babylon 5 came in at number 10 *ducks for cover*
I’m more disturbed by BSG at #7.
Fringe being as low as #94 negates the whole list. It pisses all over 80% of the whole 100, i.e. should be top 20…
BSG IS one of the greatest sci-fi/fantasy shows of all-time. It would be top 5 in my own personal list, certainly above the massively overrated Buffy (saying that, I would probably still place it #9 or #10).
I’d never put TOS up there at #2 either, though you can’t argue with its placing in this list, there’s no doubt it’s one of the most important shows ever made. TNG all the way for me (even if at least half the episodes now make me want to end my own life rather than carrying on watching…..lol)
Babylon 5 was a show with an ambition that wasn’t matched by the production values or the cast. On numerous occasions it reached beyond its grasp, and while this occasionally produced brilliant television it wasn’t consistent enough to merit the acclaim and praise that so many have bestowed upon it.
In short, Babylon 5 is a big pile of shit.
Darnit. Run out of barrels.
Joking aside, when it started* I didn’t like it much at all. It was a bit too soap operish for me.
Catching series later on I got quite into it though. There were some very intriguing story arcs and characters who straggle the sides of good and evil. (The aliens were generally more interesting characters than the main human characters.) Actually going back and giving series one a proper chance, I liked that too.
I still find the acting somewhat cheesy in places, as well as the captain’s speechifiying. Amusingly I think they were aware of this and actually made fun of it in one of the episodes, but overall it was pretty good. I generally prefer it to Star Trek, although I like other aspects of that.
*Yes I’m that old.
Never seen it……though I did do some voicing for a Babylon 5 fans made audiodrama….
I’ve just been watching the first two stories of Sapphire and Steel on youtube. I loved this show as a kid. You never really expect it to be as good as it was back then, but this is great stuff. I can’t believe that it has been all but forgotten.
The pace is as you’d expect for the time, but it really lends itself to the creepy atmosphere. It is incredibly cheap looking, but the writing and the performances are excellent, what I’ve seen so far would easily compare with the best of Who. But it’s far darker than Who. Lovely stuff.
The second story was fantastic. Worth buying.
Big Finish Productions do a range of ‘Sapphire & Steel’ audio adventures. They are set sometime after their last TV adventure and Sapphire and Steel have been ‘reborn’ into new incarnations, in order to explain why they now look and sound like David Warner and Susannah Harker.
A Points Of View forum thread has turned up on the old Google Alerts. I am equally angered and bemused by this…. http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mbpointsofview/NF1951566?thread=6470174&post=10...
I give you… a really odd quiz type thing: http://www.sporcle.com/games/Serlingist/red_dwarf
I retract my earlier attitude - it’s actually really good!
I didn’t do well though… I blame tiredness. 24/50
25, poo.
Hmm, these are fun though, We should make some of these!
36. Thought I’d had the highest score from beating Andrew, but Ian is a GIT.
> I would have had 29 but I can’t spell “Bartakovski”
Ditto! ^__^
One has to wonder how that was compiled. Did some sad bastard just stay up all night with the transcripts to count the words?

25….no surprise with my memory. I did get dispensers though…before I got Talkie :?
It took me over 3 minutes to realise that you didn’t have to do them in order!!
hehe, those quizzes are seriously fun, though. I found a good one that’s all piano intros and you had to guess the song.
Gonna lose a lot of time on that website methinks.
31!!!!
I can’t believe I didn’t put Arlene Rimmer and Deb Lister, especially after I’d put the Dog (*slaps head*) and I was just typing Toaster when it ended!! Other ones I didn’t get, Cat priest, Justice computer, Jake Bullet (*sigh*), William and Sebastien Doyle (*double sigh*), Platini, McClaren, etc.
Ones I’m most pleased I got - Elvis (lol), Katerina (for her surname lol), Hudzen 10, Able. Also, who would have thought Confidence was 9th??
I can’t figure out how I got Duane Dibbley and both Sebastian and William, but missed Jake Bullet!!
I also got the dispensers but missed talkie! Annoyingly I got tons of extra ones but bizarrely had problems remembering really obvious people like Ackerman and Nirvanah Crane, I got total brain freeze on their names! I didn’t even think about trying BtE characters *facepalm*
That is a good website though, Ian and I lost track of time on there the other night and I ended up heading to bed at 4am when I needed to be up for 7.30am… oops.
The “words” ending in ‘que’ is pretty good, i didn’t know I knew so many words that ended in ‘que’…
Expect a lot of these types of quizzes in the near future. i love these types of ones!!
33
and kicking myself for forgetting Duane Dibbley while my Lucas McClarens weren’t being accepted.
This is the best quiz on the site:
http://www.sporcle.com/games/toosexy.php
I got 62 out of 63 on the Simpsons characters in two minutes flat, then took another minute to remember the name of the second one of the cops.
I got them all except hat. That’s a sad indictment of my brain and its unwavering retention of obscure, worthless information when I’ve been cursed with such awful memory for important/useful details… damn brain.
I’m too sexy for this post.
I’ll be making one anyways soon, but i want to do quizzes as well as make them. Has anyone found any TV Theme type ones yet? If so what are they called, i cant’ seem to find any!

They’re all US though.

I typed theme in search. ;)
76 out of 110… hmm, really enjoyed that one.
OOh nice one. Well i’ve typed in ‘theme’ into the search and it didnt’ return those results. So ner.
Cheers for finding them though. They’re providing much entertainment in the house.
Ian & I got 85/110 though I fully expect Tanya and/or John to come along and blow that score out of the water!
> 70/110
I got 73. I realise it’s rather Partridge-esque to point that out. Which is precisely why I’m doing it.
69, dude. Looking at the answers, I *should* have got around 75 - the worst missed one being the one in the very top right. I played it over and over about six or seven times and still didn’t get it!
I knew what the last one was going to be before it played, though, simply because I could tell from the previous ones what sort of show was going to be in there and hadn’t turned up yet!
ZOMG! DS9/Red Dwarf crossover?

I always thought it would be a good idea to have some sort of band/gig thing for a Dimension Jump that played red Dwarf themes, cues and other geeky media. never did get round to sorting that out… :(
Have you ever heard this before? It’s not new or anything, but it recently came to mind. Not sure if it’s old news already around here.
Erm, I seems to remember being on Spotify at Ian, Jo and Capps’s paddings and discovering this weird tune. I dont think we ever posted our find on here though. Someone may interject if that’s bollocks.
The Red Dwarf. Sounds like what the gritty reboot of the series would be called.
More likely ‘The Red’ lol. Definitely not ‘The Dwarf’ though, or even just ‘Dwarf’.
Btw, the ‘he’s right behind me, isn’t he?’ gag is ALWAYS funny. The reason being it’s not an actual joke, it’s a situation we can all relate to.

This is the official trailer for the new pilot episode of The Fruit Cases, featuring Captain Straw voiced by Rolf Harris, Peel-in, Sour Lolly and Happy Apple voiced by Chris Barrie, Cookie voiced by Andy Nyman and Pear shape voiced by Holly Houliston.
Created by Adrian Warwick, The Fruit Cases is a magical adventure aimed at young children.
Heh. I like how most of the fruit have the more conventional eye set-up (sort of) and the apple has one eye on the end of his stalk.
I had to stop watching it after 60 seconds. I know I’m not the target audience but it was making me cringe far too much.
The name “Deadly Headshot” is obviously something that has actually happened to him/her and left them totally brain dead!! Talk about getting your facts slightly wrong… With know;edge like that, he/she could have joined us for our first few episodes of ScutterCast!!

Modest too.
It goes with his almost uncanny ability to make friends wherever he goes.

Found this quite interesting from the the old Google Alerts earlier. All about the post production done on BtE by Mike Seymour and co…
Google alerts has just sent me a link to some fan designed alternative covers for your Red Dwarf collection.
Apart from the elongated pencil design of Red Dwarf on the spines, I kinda like these.
http://www.customaniacs.org/forum/custom-coversets/137761-red-dwarf-comp...
Hmmm. Firstly, the existing ones are great, some of the best multi-series DVD covers ever, so I’m not sure why you’d want to replace them with a plain and boring design that’s exactly the same for each one and which anyone could knock up in paint in five minutes. Secondly, as you say, Remastered ship, BLEGH. And thirdly… “season”?

I’M OUT.
I mean, it’s clearly aimed at people with pirate copies, but even they could do better.
I do like spines that combine into a single image though. Like the old remastered….but I hadn’t noticed the use of the word “Season”.
Oh dear :?

And the Red Dwarf fans, are they hard to deal with? “No, they’re lovely. Although I did recently get involved with a bunch of Red Dwarf extremists who have this website. They were saying I’m bitter. I wish I’d got paid a bit more, but there’s no way I’m bitter. I was so angry, I called up the guy who runs the website to complain. He’s the singer in a band apparently. Well, he wasn’t in, so I shouted at the drummer for a while instead.”
Hehe, we’re “Red Dwarf extremists”.
I’m not bitter, I just Google the usernames of people who accuse me of being bitter on forums, find contact information for people connected to them and rant down the phone. No bitterness whatsoever.
What the hell are “Red Dwarf extremists” anyway? Do we have, like, Molotov cocktails to throw, slogans to write on walls, thousand-page manifestos, things like that?
Anyway, sounds like he’s staking his future on making millions off his tell-all, ‘cos I’d be willing to bet that this “I’m not bitter, I just Google-stalk my online detractors so I can yell at them over their phone” does very little to inspire confidence in any future employers of his.
I particularly like the fact that he states he isn’t bitter, then says that the bloke he yelled at on the phone wasn’t even the person he had intended to contact.
Poor drummer. ;)
I like Norman though. He makes me smile, if not entirely for the right reasons.
It’s such a shame. I love Norm’s Holly, but think that he’s a cunt. *sighs sadly*

James still has his number so if I say something that aggravates Norm he knows who is calling. I’d love to know what gave him the impression I run the site.
Maybe he meant it like this:
RED DWARF X-TREME!
That’d be so cool if I had a clue what it was.
I’d love to know what gave him the impression I run the site.
That would be a classic knee-jerk reaction to a critic… It’s essential that we all… HE’S THE WEBMASTER!!!
Perhaps I should repent and offer to take him to the pub so we can sit and discuss it like grown men over a pint of bitter.
- Bitter, Norman?
- No, are you?
- Would you like a pint of bitter, Norman?
- Err, yeah.

Very interesting! If I wanted to be pedantic I’d say ‘stasis isn’t the same as cryo-sleep’, but what the smeg.

It’s spelt completely differently.
> If I wanted to be pedantic I’d say ‘stasis isn’t the same as cryo-sleep’
It’s spelt completely differently.
That too.
Just had the Topless Robot article posted to my Facebook wall. I read point number 8 first and thought “Well, they obviously haven’t got a fucking clue!” and didn’t read the rest.
Ill-informed nonsense. Why should they “admit that Back to Earth was a waste of time” when for millions of fans it was anything but?
And as for this:
We live in a time when Doctor Who is nearly as popular in the United States as it is in Britain.
I don’t even know where to start, except to say NO IT BLOODY ISN’T. It gets roughly an EIGHTH of the viewing figures in the US that it does in the UK, despite the population being nearly five times bigger.
8. Admit Back to Earth Was a Waste of Time
One of the better things BTE did was completely ignore the pile of wank that was Only the Good… The show, while not my cup of tea in its present form, is in a far better state that it was in at the turn of the millennium.
7.Increase the Show’s Visibility in the U.S.
Who gives a shit? How is this ‘saving’ the show?
5. Get Back to Basics
Bizarre to use series VI as an example. How is that, with its season long arc, back to basics for a UK sitcom?
Don’t disagree with the rest of it.
I didn’t know Danny was in Little Shop of Horrors. Only the other day I spotted his and Charles Augins’s names in the credits of Labyrinth.
Yup, he’s the guy who goes “Good for you!” in the song “Da-Doo”, although I think he’s just miming someone else’s voice.
It was shot in the UK (Pinewood?) so the “names” aside, most of the supporting cast are British…
Remind me to play ‘Chilly Down’ at the Next DJ. I ALWAYS sodding forget about it.
A Google Images find rather than a Google Alerts find:
This recent article prompted me to search for an image of the Ace Rimmer Worlds Tour T-shirt (which a friend of mine had and I always wished I did too!), and for some reason this picture from Something Awful’s Ctrl-Alt-Delete mocking thread came up in the search results.

I don’t know why but one of the other search results was this terrifying thing. Believe me, you don’t want to click on that link. Really. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
Liked the main pic.
The link pic made me laugh so hard, the baby almost fell out.
Heh. The first seems like Red Dwarf done Morcambe and Wise style.
As for the latter…. disturbing image aside, the guy/gal has talent but they need to sort out their proportions! Or maybe it’s a holo version of Ace and his light bee’s contracted a virus. His lifestyle may put him at particular risk of that. Next time install some proper RBR AV software before-hand Ace-lad. ;)

MAA: Can you quickly run us through “The Final Battle! (‘Nuff Said!)” - what we can expect when Cartoon Network airs the episode this Friday?
Matt Wayne: Expect a lot of laughs, a few tears, and something to think about. And some puns. And one obscure Red Dwarf reference. Nicole Dubuc wrote a hysterical final episode, a great big romp to cap our great big cosmic storyline.

Its [sic] just *got* to be shit though hasnt [sic again] it? Holly (the guy) isnt [very sic indeed] in it either…
:( .
From Go Faster Stripe’s mailing list:
Our next DVD release is looking like it will be Norman Lovett’s DVD - we are aiming for a January release there. Although there’s an old school ‘direct from VHS’ DVD of Stewart Lee’s 1995 standup show that might well pip it to the post.
You being sarcastic about Norm, or sincere about Stew? I’ll accept either.
I want to see Norman try to buy the rights to the Holly character then he can appear as just a head on stage for a whole hour.
I mentioned this on a Dwarfcast but I genuinely think that Hattie should do the black polo-neck jumper thing for a special Q&A at DJ…
Was looking for any Red Dwarf stuff on Google, and found this piece about a West Ham mascot. Good looking bloke.
http://www.whoateallthepies.tv/lookalikes/102867/shit-lookalikes-hammerh...
>I mentioned this on a Dwarfcast but I genuinely think that Hattie should do the black polo-neck jumper thing for a special Q&A at DJ…
Yes she should. But not via Skype. She should sit on stage in the corner with a box that has the front cut out on her head
>the new Kryten head does seem a bit loose.
Well I think that’s just cute!
> Yes she should. But not via Skype. She should sit on stage in the corner with a box that has the front cut out on her head
I think the idea was that it could be then blown up onto a big screen and made to look a bit more TV.
It’s a very nice report, but everytime he mentions ‘Rob Grant’ it throws me off…
I mentioned it to him, he’s asked them to amend it but he’s still waiting.
Right, this wasn’t found through Google, but it is about Red Dwarf, and as I didn’t know where to post it, I thought I’d shove it here as it doesn’t really merit a thread of it’s own. So:
The BBC Website have got a piece where it’s entertainment writers tell us about the forthcoming Films/Books/Music/TV etc to look forward to. The TV bit is from Lizo Mzimba (formerly ‘Lizo off of Newsround’) and mentions Dwarf X.
And after more than three years sci-fi favourite Red Dwarf makes a long-awaited return. Like its last three-episode run Back to Earth it will be broadcast on digital channel Dave. All four of the main cast will be reprising their roles as the ship’s long-serving crew.
So there.
I struggle to think of BTE > X as “long-awaited”, considering the gaps we’re used to…
Not from Google?…..are you that one guy that uses BING!??!!!
I’d heard legend, but never expected them to be true…..
Okay…I watched the episode and I’m sure Sheldon says something about sitting down to watch all 61 episodes of the BBC comedy, Red Dwarf. I’m assuming that Back To Earth isn’t included in that boxset. So where’s the extra 9 from? Smeg Ups and Documentaries maybe?
Wikipedia says 61 so Big Bang says 61.
Maybe he includes BTE, the xtended episodes, the animated episodes and the pilot which all get it to 61.
…that said, I am reminded of somebody else who had similarly shoddy research…or lack of. I think I better keep quiet…
Is it normally on the money with that sort of thing? I’ve only ever watched it once, when my South African girlfriend at the time wanted me to watch it and explain all the geeky references etc. That killed the comedy somewhat.
>Is it normally on the money with that sort of thing?
To be honest, I don’t think they go into anything more than the basic of knowledge most of the time. At first, i thought the writing was a genuine admiration for most things geeky. Now I suspect the writers are not really all that geeky and are just trying to cash in on the culture of the “nerd”
I don’t mind a little inaccuracy. They at least tried.
Besides, 16 million Americans now knowing what Red Dwarf is can only be a good thing.
Let us recall the infamous line from Buffy:
“I’ve seen every episode of Doctor Who. Not Red Dwarf though, it’s not on DVD.”
WHAT, AND ALL OF DOCTOR WHO IS?
Wikipedia says 61 so Big Bang says 61.
Maybe he includes BTE, the xtended episodes, the animated episodes and the pilot which all get it to 61.
I think the Wikipedia entry will have said 61 by counting the original 52, plus three for BTE, plus six for RDX. It’s now been split into a more correct figure (“55 plus 6 to broadcast”), but clearly they just picked it up from there.
I seem to be in a minority among nerdy friends I know by really liking TBBT. It’s funny, it’s got good characters, they generally get their comics-referencing alright (mainly because, as a WB sitcom, they’re heavy on DC stuff), an issue of Phonogram once appeared in it, and I fancy Kaley Cuoco to a really quite ridiculous degree.
I do like Big Bang Theory, but i have to say i agree with a lot with this article about ‘Why Geeks shouldn’t/don’t like Big Bang Theory’
http://www.ugo.com/tv/11-reasons-geeks-hate-the-big-bang-theory
Number 9 is probably more apt at the moment given the Dwarf reference
It didn’t even occur to me that Penny doesn’t even have a last name. I do agree though, her character has had not an inch of development in 5 series.
Must admit i don’t agree with the studio audience one.
I think Penny’s character has developed somewhat as it’s gone on. To start off she knew nothing about anything from Leonard’s world. Being from the world of the “cool” where drinking and partying and expensive shoes reign supreme.
Although still clearly a part of the “cool” crowd, she has found herself understanding more of the geek references and stuff from Leonard’s world. At times when she is with friends from “her world”, she finds herself making geeky references that she wouldn’t have known anything about before and non of her friends understand…
As for enjoying the show…yeah. I really just like the characters. I don’t think the show is as clever as some people make it out to be, but I find myself really laughing at some of the character comedy.
Laying an ocean of canned laughter down on top of something doesn’t make it any funnier, and in fact often makes things less funny.
FUCK THE FUCKING FUCKING FUCK OFF.
How am I supposed to take an article about television seriously when it’s written by someone who doesn’t have THE MOST BASIC FUCKING CLUE about how television works?
Chuck Lorre is notorious for how badly his shows treat women. Two And A Half Men is probably the worst offender, but The Big Bang Theory is horrible as well. Women exist as sex objects for men to lust over and not much else. Amazingly enough, the show actually tried to take a step in the right direction by introducing Leslie Winkle, a female optical physicist who works with Leonard at the lab. Leslie, played by Sara Gilbert, brought a refreshing take on the female geek to the table, but after four episodes as a featured performer, the writers claimed they “didn’t know how to write for her,” so she was dropped from the cast.
It’s true, though. The character didn’t work. However, the show also currently contains three brilliant and really funny lead female characters. So, y’know.
And here we are at the central core of hatred at the middle of every Chuck Lorre sitcom. Women, no matter what their situation, are portrayed as nothing more than objects of desire for dudes. Whether it’s the cringe-inducingly painful courtings of Alan on Two And A Half Men, or the several women that have cycled through The Big Bang Theory, they’re never treated with anything near the level of attention their male counterparts get. The show’s female lead, the lovely Penny, doesn’t even have a last name, for God’s sake.
Dude, you made the same point twice. Pretty bad form for a list article. Also, it’s not true. ori’s got it right, here - Penny’s actually had more development than most of the other characters (especially Howard and Raj, who’ve barely developed at all since the start).
Even Malcolm In The Middle had a better geek rock theme from They Might Be Giants.
It’s true that “Boss of Me” is a better theme than “The History of Everything”. However, THEY ARE BOTH GREAT.
And, really, at the end of the day, the biggest geek gripe against The Big Bang Theory is that we know plenty of geeks who would be better protagonists for a TV show. Most scientists we know are the absolute opposite of the stereotype on the show — when you’re super-smart, you spend your time working on world-changing projects, not visiting the comic book store every Wednesday. The real geek is too busy subtitling anime or modding Skyrim to keep a job like that. If they wanted to show the actual world of geekdom, they need to lose the high-paying science jobs and focus on dudes writing articles for Internet magazines.
They didn’t “want to show the actual world of geekdom”, though. They wanted to write a funny sitcom. Sitcom characters don’t actually tend to be that similar to real people. That’s usually what makes them funny. They exaggerate the worst of us. Are you seriously going to criticise Fawlty Towers because its protagonist is so hilariously unreal? Or Red Dwarf, because nobody in the real world is as bad as Rimmer?
If The Big Bang Theory had set out to be a sharp, cutting satire about geeks, then fair enough. If it was trying to represent “us” the way that, say, Spaced did, it would be failing miserably. But it’s not. The nerdery is a hook on which to hang a generally very good, broad-humoured character sitcom. That’s all.
Seen the episode now.
Penny and Wine vs Red Dwarf. Penny and Wine has no chance.
Penny and wine is probably one of the few combos that could drag me away from RD.
>‘Why Geeks shouldn’t/don’t like Big Bang Theory’
Oh good. A list article that tells me what I should/shouldn’t like. They’re my absolute FAVOURITE!
>WHAT, AND ALL OF DOCTOR WHO IS?
Since the Triumvirate were capable of, amongst other things, interfering with the space time continuum, creating artificial intelligence and using the dark arts, is it really a stretch that they managed to track down all those missing episodes?
I’d comment on The Big Bang theory if I could watch it for more than twenty-five seconds without wanting the world to end.
Most scientists we know are the absolute opposite of the stereotype on the show — when you’re super-smart, you spend your time working on world-changing projects, not visiting the comic book store every Wednesday.
Are those things mutually exclusive? Okay, since the Scientists probably work on Wednesday, they probably are, but… point is, you can be a brilliant scientist, and enjoy comic books.
>Penny and wine is probably one of the few combos that could drag me away from RD.
Me too, but then I’ve seen Red Dwarf. If she came around when the new series was being broadcast? Well… if I had to chose, I’d probably still go with Penny, but I’d be thinking of RD. (For a bit, anyway.) However, the fact that Dave show repeats and I’d inevitably end up buying the box-set would be a large deciding factor there.

Would still be Dwarf for me. Now, if it were Bernadette….
Big Bang is outstanding!

What instrument do you play?
What instrument do you play?
Piano and keyboard. Currently learning guitar.
Piano and keyboard. Currently learning guitar.
I play violin, piano and do a bit of singing. Is there usually a piano at the hotel where DJ is held? Between you, me and Alex (and others? are there other musicians on here too?) we could get a nice group together if only I had the funds to get over there for a DJ. But maybe now I’ve got a better job…
There are a fair few musicians who go to DJ, aye. i’ve always said we should set up some sort of live band playing Dwarf related and other cast-related stuff like Labyrinth, maybe even going so far as to persuade DJJ to sing Chilly Down with us :)
>are there other musicians on here too?
I can play the keyboard, but I’m out of practice, and it looks like that’s covered already. :)
I’ve never been to DJ but I hope to rectify that at some point.
are there other musicians on here too?
I can play the triangle =P

Rehearsal would be the main problem. It’d be a bit rag-tag without, but it would be do-able in theroy.
It’s the main reason the idea hasn’t been viable. I’ve been trying for years.
I play the Bass guitar and would totally be up for an idea like that, however I’m in Spain at the moment studying abroad. Have you guys considered doing something in the vein of the Doctor Who Fan Orchestra?

Aye, with everyone spread around I can imagine. I know I’ve played plenty of gigs with Venture South which have suffered greatly from not being able to rehearse until the day before, and that’s with the musicians whose playing and quirks I know inside out and whose parts I’ve written.
Hmm. Well I’d be willing to give it a try. Write out some parts. Meet up by skype or videochat beforehand so we can play for each other and revise parts. (Obviously too much delay time to actually rehearse that way, but at least we can get to know each other’s playing and have a rapport.) Arrive a day or two early, meet up and rehearse.
My attitude is, it ain’t the Proms. If it falls apart, at least we had a good time. :)
Google Alerts has come up with a link to a forum discussing:

“Fan of British sitcom “Red Dwarf” escapes Philadelphia Police custody. Last seen wearing handcuffs and green jumpsuit. Answers to Smeghead”
Some humorous responses on the forum thread. One person getting the Smoke Me A Kipper line wrong…but in fairness, this was picked up on later. It all stems from this story apparently about an escaped felon in Philidelphia. http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/Escaped-Prisoner-on-the-Loos-1...
Where he is described as:
“Police say the suspect is a black man, about 6’3”, with a sparse beard and mustache. He has multiple tattoos on his face and arms, including an “H” between his eyebrows.”
tattoos…including an “H” between his eyebrows.
Man, if only Carbug wasn’t stolen from him, it would make a great getaway chase.
Oh, that diagram is shit. I drew it in thirty minutes, with a mouse, from a Series VIII screengrab. I’ve thought of redoing it as a proper vector jobby. Maybe I will if I can afford to buy a new Wacom tablet.
As far as I’m aware, we haven’t had any official confirmation of when RDX will be airing other than sometime in Autumn. I think Robert mentioned September on his blog which, although probable, still isn’t official.
This forum posting came in on the Google Alerts which has a personal email from Robert to one of the users stating “And yes, there is a new season of red dwarf coming this Sept-Oct. “
http://www.planetoceanalliance.org/forum/showthread.php/18749-Kryten-s-R...
I still suspect that this is Robert assuming when it’ll be, but it could be that he has been given more info…
Chris Evans (not that one) has just announced that Norm’s new DVD ‘Outside The Box’ is now available from www.gofasterstripe.com.
Here’s the blurb:
It’s said that you shouldn’t meet your heroes, but it turns out as long as your hero is Norman Lovett, then it’s all OK. Norman is probably best known for his portrayal of Holly in Red Dwarf. And we’ve managed to fulfil another one of our comedy ambitions, spending time with him making this DVD.
It was recorded in September 2011, just after Norman finished a run in Edinburgh, so he’s primed and red hot - not that you’d notice of course. Norman’s style of laid back surrealist whimsy masks the fact that he was “on fire” that night. Why not see for yourself and see if he doesn’t become your hero too.
Oh – and extras you say? Well, there’s a late night, after gig chat with Arnold Brown, who we happened to record the same night. The pair reveal just what it’s like to be a couple of old fellas doing comedy.
I doubt it’s of interest frankly, but I’ve reviewed Norm’s DVD on a new site I set up the other day. It’s mainly there just to collate Dwarf news each week in the run up to the new series, but in the meantime I thought I’d use it for bits like this too. I’m going to try and keep it running at least until the new series has been on, then I’ll review whether I want to keep it going or not.
Excellent, Alex! With everything that’s been said, it’s easy to forget just how good Norman actually is.
Also, I’m delighted there’s another Red Dwarf site out there.
I keep thinking of launching one, but I don’t think I’d have anything interesting to say.
Excellent, Alex! With everything that’s been said, it’s easy to forget just how good Norman actually is.
Yes, it seemed like a good chance to redress the balance by looking at why I like him and his act. A few people I’ve spoken to outdside of G&T seemed to be under the impression that I hate Norman, and it’s just not true.
I keep thinking of launching one, but I don’t think I’d have anything interesting to say.
I sort of fear the same is true of me to be honest.
G&T is just so comprehensive that it’s hard to think what a new Red Dwarf fansite could actually add nowadays. You want an online community? Well, between here and TOS that’s covered pretty extensively. Behind the scenes goss? What other site would be as dedicated as to fill droughts in Red Dwarf happenings by reviewing Dark Ages or Wally Who, or scour the internet for anything with even the most tenous Dwarf connection, or start a flame war with Iain Lee. Everything I want is right here!
A few will maybe spring up now that RDX is set to air… Or maybe not, this isn’t 1996 anymore and the novelty factor of “I have a website” is no longer prevalent. Even if they do, they probably won’t last.
That’s the problem right there. That’s why in focusing on covering news mainly at the moment, to create a central source for all the little bits of information that tend to get passed by in the forum. Like I say though, come October I’ll review the situation. While we are in the run up to airing though there seems to be a gap for something else.
I’m planning on launching a website focusing on editorials about Doctor Who, a similar approach to Red Dwarf stuff might be interesting.
Nice blog Alex. I learnt something reading it, cus im not constantly on twitter,
so yeah. Rounding things up and personal comment, I’m all for variety of internet set ups.
Well, there were a few G+T sites and then G+T swallowed them up.
It’s like Microsoft in that respect. And very few others.
That wasn’t anything to do with the fact that RedDwarfHQ and Richard Naylor tweeted people to vote at all…
I’d just like to point out that I voted about ten mins before Richard Naylor Tweeted about it.
I’d just like to point out that Moffat had better get his arse in gear if he wants me to stop wishing it was Toby Whithouse’s Who coming this autumn, with Damien Malony (Hal in Being Human) as the 12th Doctor.
In other news…Merlin! *cheers* RDX! *wanks*

Bits that caught my eye as I skimmed through those reviews.
The above photo does not do Pete the Dinosaur justice. For a low budget show, the CGI work is great. Pete looks three dimensional, moves smoothly, and interacts with characters and props flawlessly. The CGI would hold up for a big budget television show today.
…
“Pete” is good overall.
“‘Pete’ is good overall,” he said. “Good overall.” “Good.”
… No, I don’t see it either.
Bit of a mix-up here. And come on, you might not be too keen on the original Kochanski, but calling her a snake-haired demon seems a bit harsh!
Kochansky is played by Clara Grogan. She will be played in series seven, eighth, and Back to Earth by Elizabeth Morehead, whom I find far more attractive than gorgan. Personally, it is difficult to see what Lister finds in her at the moment. Maybe it is indicative of his low goals in life.
Which country is better at geography?
One line in particular stands out for me. Rimmer is tracking the despair squid on SONAR as it approaches Starbug. He does not know what it is, but comments that it is the size of New Mexico. Viewers of a British sitcom can visualize the American state of New Mexico? Odds are, most Americans could not do that. The reverse would certainly never happen. Can you imagine a character on How I Met your Mother comparing something to the size of Essex? Imagine how well that would work. I will concede Red Dwarf is a cult hit in the United States more so than many other BBC offerings. Tha joke may have been for Americans, though I imagine they overestimated our general grasp of geography.
Never realised the Dog/Cat scenes had such Unfortunate Implications:
“Parallel Universe” is most well known for its opening dance sequence. The idea came about because the creators of Red Dwarf, Rob Grant and Doug Naylor, were concerned that writing Cat as such a stupid character might be racist. They wanted to give Danny John-James, a talented song and dance man as well as actor, a chance to play a role other than Cat as usual. You have to find that odd considering Dog refers to Cat as “boy” right before the dance off. Perhaps there is a cultural difference in the United Kingdom that makes that less offensive, but my southern sensibilities had me wondering.
A method of joke quoting that doesn’t really work:
Now, cat offers up a suggestion to a problem that would be a science fiction staple on another show, but absent on Red Dwarf. when the doors seal tight because Holly shurs down, Cat suggests blasting them open with lasers. Kryten replies that is a fine idea, but for two problems. One, there is no power for a laser and two, they do not have any lasers. Maybe you have to hear it for the joke to be funny.
Oddly, I did try to watch that scene without sound and just lip reading to put that theory of “having to hear it to get it” to the test. I found it funny because I already knew the dialogue…but my wife didn’t.
Hattie’s hand in this photo looks peculiar. Not as bad as me, mind.

As you can see, she was really really really really really thrilled to meet him.

I discovered the website of Adam ‘Wayne’ Morris and there are some fantastic anecdotes on there, but this description of his working with Danny on Maid Marian is worth a read:
Just checked my ‘Google Alerts’ and was going to post the Digital Spy thread that cropped up…then I realised how many fucking twats were posting in it with stupid fucking comments and I thought ‘fuck that’. I hate it when the ‘Google Alerts’ leaves me with a sour taste in my mouth!
Luckily, this also cropped up. Now I’ve already seen some of this posted over on TOS forums. But this puts it all together in one place so wonderfully. Basically, some great fan art and sculptings of our boys from the Dwarf

Great article, thanks Dave!
Oh man, I’d never heard about DJJ’s false detainment in Minehead. It’s shocking how many people have been arrested or detained just for being black. I’ve had 2 friends get pulled over on a “DWB.” I know there are good police out there and I do appreciate their work, but there are still a disturbing number of sad ones with nothing better to do than “racial profiling” - yet another euphemism for racism. (Sorry if I come off as fixated on racism. It’s been on my mind a lot lately because of the Trayvon Martin story.)
Yeah, I saw those over on TOS, they’re fab! Nice to see the evolution from sketch to sculpture :)
I’m very disappointed that there’s not a whole section on his appearance in the Tongue Tied video on Wayne Morris’s site.
1996 you started your GCSE’s? I hate you! You make me feel old! I finished in 1990!!
I’m revising for my 11+.
I’m not 11, I’ve just failed it a shitload of times.

Aside from anything else, the OP links to TOS and then appears to know nothing about a new series… *facepalm*
First thing I saw on my last ‘Google Alert’ update was a forum posting asking if there were any other Dwarf fans. Nothing unusual there. Except for somebody with the inability to find Red Dwarf on You Tube, Yahoo or Google who was then asking for links. Wonder how they were spelling it? Basically, we come across these kind of postings all the time. They’re nothing out of the ordinary. Until I saw the name of the site…. StabYourself.net? Is Red Dwarf now appealing to self harmers?!!!

Luckily, the alert also had a light fluffy one too….And I suspect some of us here may know a little bit more about this.

I find it difficult to be too hard on Marjii since most of the feedback on this false confirmation has been negative (I’m talking to you Digital Spy you massive pricks!) it’s nice to see someone getting excited… that said the RD geek in me just can’t let the major mistake slide! Ed Naylor… really?!
